The concept of Astral Travel as currently known and discussed is entirely a modern conception. Historically, visions and prophecies were held regarding their similar modern counterpart. This grants a challenge when seeking out a Sigil for Astral Travel or Astral Projection. The options given are to either create your own using specific methodologies within preexisting systems, or pulling the closest associated skills sets of non-corporeal entities such as Angels, Daimons, Spirits, & Intelligences from grimoires and reference materials.
A common way to create your own Sigils with very little or no formal education and widely acceptable is by using Letter Deduction of a desired phrase. Contemplating a Phrase such as “I WANT TO EXPERIENCE ASTRAL TRAVEL TONIGHT”, then proceed to deduct repeated letter. This process leaves the letters: IWANTOEXPRCSVLGH. (Edit: Traditionally one would also Remove The Vowels, however in this example I made the error of leaving the vowels in). Using the letters provided, create an image that may or may not overlap the different letters. You may choose to place your newly created sigil in a circle, consecrate, focus, empower, utilize, and finally destroy the sigil in a matter that is appropriate to your own practice.
Alternatively, one can research any number of Non-corporeal Beings as previously mentioned and generating their Sigil by the Square, Rose-Cross, or other methodologies. Take caution to research what Beings would be well suited to your own practices as well as having attributes associated with the intended result. In this case we are looking for Beings associated with psychic development, visions, dreams, and may even include prophesies if so inclined. Modern associations with Astral Travel or Astral Projection should be scrutinized and researched with proper resources to rule out fads and pop culture influences and poorly assumed associations that do not hold up against solid research.
In Levi’s book, Transcendental Magic, he associates the Archangel Gabriel as the “Angel of Aspirations and Dreams”. Various siglis of Gabriel can be found rather easily. However, if you are not particular to give heart to works by Levi, you may find alternatives in the studies of the Hermetic Qabalah (Kabbalah). In doing so the practitioner may find the 9th Sephiroth being Yesod within their reach. For the studious reader, one will find that each Sephira is nestled within each other, leading to each Sephira is nestled in Malkuth within the World of Asiyah. Like wise each Sephira contains their own tree of life within itself. Much like how the top of each tree is the base of another tree, a practitioner can look to what is within their reach at any given moment to conduct their work. However, I digress. Within Yesod is the Divine hierarchy associated with the Moon, Water, and the sublunar realms that lead into the Psychic and Astral Realms. Granted the Astral Realms in these given terms are not that of the common terminology but are where the common terminology of our modern communications has borrowed from. Here we use the associations of the sublunar and dreams which are within the reach of a practitioner of Helenistic Astrology.
From the Divine hierarchy we have the Divine Name Shaddai El Chai שַׁדַּי אֵל חַי the ”Almighty Living G-d”, The Archangel Gabriel גַּבְרִיאֵל the Chief of the Angelic Guards “who is set over all the Powers” (Enoch 40:9), The Kerubim כְּרוּבִים “Those who Bless”, The planetary association being the Moon- Levanah לְבָנָה “The Wanderer”, the Intelligence Malkah be-Tarshishim hed Beruach Shechaqim מלכא בתרשישים עד ברוח שחקים the “Queen from far away coastal places and as far as the 7 Spheres of the God/Sprits of Greatness intellects” as well as the Intelligence Shelachel שלחאל “in the way of salvation” (self init. GD/Cicero pg163) the Angel of the Moon (Encyclopedia of Angels, pg 185). We also get the Spirit Chas(h)modai חָשׁמודאי “Sentient whom delights in helping those to blossom” (Catalogue of the Hebrew Books in the Library of the British Museum By Joseph Zedner Page 557) and the alternative Spirit Schad Barschemoth ha-Shartathan שׁד ברשמות השרתתן “The protecting Spirit of the Registrar servant”.
With the Divine hierarchy you can get yourself into plenty of “Good Trouble” by invoking top to bottom with your choice of the 2 listed Intelligences, and your choice of the 2 listed Spirits over the sigil of choice (the sigil of the Spirit chosen). Chasmodai, for example can be represented as the Enochian letter Mals often represented as the letter “P” and looks like Omega. Alternatively for a Non-Enochian alternative, the direct Sigil of Chasmodai can also be used as shown below (Regarde, Golden Dawn 7th Ed. Pg 660) and placed within a circle.
Much like before, ideally one would follow the protocol of the practice. Chasmodai is traditionally invoked while doing Geomancy, a type of divination numbers and use of earth/dirt, dice, or coins. However any member of the Divine hierarchy can be invoked and is not limited to the usage within Geomancy.
Within the tradition of Geomancy, the practitioner begins by preforming the Lesser Banishment Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP) then goes to the North. While facing North raise the wand in the right hand and invoke each member of the Divine hierarchy while intoning each name. For the sake of Geomancy one would start with Divine names of Earth being Adonai Ha-Aretz,with the Archangel Uriel, and The Choir of Angels being Ashim. Typically the following invocations break this pattern and follow the remaining hierarchy of the chosen Spirit. If doing Geomancy the remainder invocations for Chasmodai would follow: Angel being Gabriel, The planetary Moon- Levanah, the Intelligence Malkah be-Tarshishim hed Beruach Shechaqim, then the Spirit Chasmodai.
While performing Geomancy, the practitioner would draw out the Lesser Invocation Pentagram at this point. Then Draw the Spirit’s Sigil in the center of the 5 pointed star. While Pointing to the sigil with the wand, pen, or finger, the practitioner will further focus and call out the Spirit again with instructions or expectations. After such the divination, casting, or squilling is preformed. Once the work or divination is cast and the Spirit is no longer needed to be present, grant the License to Depart FIRST, THEN the Banishment (LBRP).
For the adaptation for use in Astral Travel, a practitioner may experiment between using the hybrid methodology that is found in Geomancy, where the 1st half of the hierarchy is that of the Earth and the second half related to the moon. Alternatively, if no Geomancy is intended, one can use the Circle of the Art along with the complete Divine hierarchy of Yesod.
It should also be noted that utilization of Thaumaturgy, especially within the nature of invocations, can exacerbate any mental health condition and is not recommended for those suffering with severe conditions. If a mental health condition worsens after practicing, cease the practice and consult your licensed mental health doctor or practitioner.
